Nice to Meet You

As some of you know, I volunteer teaching ESL to immigrants and refugees. I usually teach a pre-literate class, where we go over letter names and sounds and sound out very basic words. But tonight, I get to teach an intermediate class, which means... games! (As opposed to blank stares of confusion.)

So here's my game. Pick one of the pictures below and on the back, write a sentence about it filling the blanks with words you come up on your own. First sentence: I am [name]. I am [number] years old. I live in [a place] with [people]. Then you pass the picture to the next person, and they continue the "story."
  • I like [stuff] and [other stuff].
  • Yesterday I [did stuff] because [good reason].
  • I used to be [something], but now I am [something better].
  • Tomorrow I will [do something awesome].
  • I hope that one day I will [do something amazing].
  • I am afraid of [scary thing].
  • I am good at [skill] and [other skill].
At the end, we read the stories out loud and talk about these people we just made up.I'll share the interesting stories after class today, but which person would you chose?

"I'm not evil at all."

"Do you have any napkins?"

"This is my left foot's favorite song."

"Why yes I am wearing gloves."

"Oh I'm most definitely evil."

"Has anyone seen my cat?"

"I know I buried that gun around here somewhere."

"Some idiot printed this book backwards."

"Nobody ever pays me in gum."

Your story was one of the best, Chad. You were an 18 (or 80, it was hard to understand) year old man that lived in West Valley with his son. You used to be a computer student, but now are a computer professional. Tomorrow you will use a computer. You hope one day to be a computer tech. You are afraid of computers.

The same thing happened with the cowboy. His skills and likes were all around horses and cowboy'ing, yet he was afraid of horses.

A couple of people had identity crises. (Or I didn't explain the game well enough...apparently "intermediate" isn't much more advanced than "beginner.") The girl with the cat was Annie who was 36 who lived in Paris with her cat and she was also a 16 year old girl living in Salt Lake City with her mom. Either way, one day she hoped to be a cat, so she's clearly got issues.

This game sounds awesome, and I love the intense psychological turn it took. Loving what you fear. Fearing what you love. I may have to try this, or something similar, with my first year writing students.
